How It All Began
The Story Behind Project CITADEL
The original concept of project CITADEL was born from a creative project by Ms Skye Vassallo. At the time, Skye was a Classics student reading for a Bachelor's degree in Classics under the auspices of the Department of Classics and Archaeology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Malta.
One of the study-units Skye completed during her Bachelor's degree was entitled Survey of Classical Epic. Led by Dr Carmel Serracino, who is now also the Principal Investigator of Project CITADEL, this study-unit explored Homer's Iliad in its several aspects (see Introducing the Homeric Epics page). The sessions combined traditional methods of teaching such as close reading and discussion with more creative activities such as role-plays, character skill-cards, and digital design.

Inspired by Dr Serracino's novel methods, Skye envisioned a video game centered around Homer's Iliad, and so part she submitted a game demonstration as part of a study-unit's project work.

The potential of Skye's idea continued to grow even after the study-unit and the University of Malta eventually teamed up with a number of partners (see Consortium page) to form the basis of project CITADEL.
