Who was Homer?

Homer is the poet believed to have composed the Iliad and the Odyssey in around the 8th century BCE. Nothing else is known for sure about this mysterious ancient poet. For example, there is much speculation about his place of birth. Scholars are even divided on whether he was in fact one person!

The Iliad and the Odyssey

The first Homeric epic, the Iliad, tells the story of the famous Trojan war. This was the siege of the Greek forces, led by Agamemnon, on the legendary city of Troy. The 'sequel' epic, the Odyssey, narrates the several adventures and turns of the Greek king Odysseus on his way back home to Ithaca after the Trojan war.
